One of the disappointing things about leaving Ottawa last year was not being able to take my portable kitchen island with me. It was not big there was no chef’s island or wall oven in our 25-year-old, west-end home that backed onto the bicycle path but it was mine. I designed it, chose the cabinets, the countertop, and agonized over the built-in table, appliance garage, and the corner cupboards.
Solution? Portable Kitchen Island. It sounds a bit space age, but the modular styling is finely crafted, visually appealing and completely functional kind of like an upscale IKEA without the Allen wrenches.

The sleek, solid wood design is tres contemporary suited primarily for loft living or a funky reno. This ingenious bit of carpentry is not permanently anchored and with a little ingenuity, the right space and a good plumber, you can take the counters, cabinets and the portable kitchen island sink with you in the moving truck.

The design of portable kitchen island is stunning all handmade by a master cabinet maker who studied nights and weekends for six years in his native Germany.
“Nobody makes something with their own hands here,” says a spindly, 34-year-old whose elegant, manicured hands defy his trade and flicker wildly with his every word. “It is the problem with the whole industry.”

The couple is exclusive Canadian dealers of the high-end, minimalistic Gunther Lambert line of German furniture and accessories. Their home a loft on an industrial strip in Toronto’s Little Chinatown that they share with their two-year-old daughter is testament to the Gunther Lambert lifestyle, a haven of wicker, wood and well-designed furnishings with portable kitchen island.

“We had a little store at home in Germany with Gunther Lambert furniture. And I thought, it’s something new. I hadn’t seen something like this in Canada from our visiting here. So what we do now is we have the Gunther Lambert collection, then we have our own designs tables, coffee tables, standing units, shelves, beds all made by Claus.”

The portable kitchen island furniture is a combination of retro elegance and modern convenience. Made of solid pine from the Thousand Islands and held together using tongue and grove and Mortice and Tennant interlocking techniques, Claus guarantees the kitchen for life.

He’s passionate about his creations, explaining in intricate detail in his thick German accent the benefits of a product called rustic oil, a chemical-free compound that brings out wood’s natural grain and gives it a fine finish.

It goes deep into the pores, there’s no lacquer. The natural color and grain are in foreground and with the oil finish there’s more of a contrast.”

Each piece is sanded by hand three times with very fine sandpaper, which gives it an incredible softness. Even the corners are soft.
This is traditional woodworking; it’s a sign of better quality.

The portable kitchen island has three components: a table and stove; a dishwasher, sink and drawers; and a full-length storage cabinet with a built-in coffee maker. It’s similar in style to the Gunther Lambert Artus kitchen, a combination of solid spruce and Carolina yellow pine, but designs are more elaborate warmer and more elegant because they contain more wood.

The pieces are finished on all four sides, for customers who prefer open-concept living, and the high-end, built-in, stainless steel, Miele appliances a top European line also available in the store add a contemporary, upscale flare. The combination table- top/oven piece is unique, primarily because of its height.

At only 31.5 inches standard for a tabletop cooks are forced to stoop over the stove. But it’s an urban lifestyle concept that allows guest to be comfortably seated at the table sipping wine and chit-chatting while the hosts stir up supper.

“Those bar stools are so uncomfortable; we never wanted something like that. We just want to be able to sit and relax.”

The stove-top height can be altered for traditional ovens and consumers can choose their own appliances based on taste and affordability.

The portable kitchen island, available in ash, cherry maple, walnut or pine, is meant to fit a particular lifestyle urban, upscale, relaxed and contemporary.

Our philosophy is that the portable kitchen island is still a part of the home, of the living area. “It’s not just to close the door and stay in the kitchen and nobody knows what you are doing.

“This is more a European style of living our style, I should say. Because when we have guests we are always in the portable kitchen island. It’s not very formal and you don’t need a dining room table.”

Each module costs about $1,900-$5,700 for the set without the appliances. But conceded that for customers looking for a less expensive alternative, plywood combinations are available in the portable kitchen island.
