Small Kitchen Islands with Small Tables
Small kitchen islands present big problems. Not only are they hard to work in, they’re difficult to eat in. While the dining room is fancier and the television tray in the den more relaxing, there are times when many of us like to eat our meals in the kitchen. Preferably on small kitchen islands, and not at the counter. Or on the floor.
Unfortunately, many of the smaller kitchens found in condominiums, town houses and even houses are not large enough to accommodate small kitchen islands. This is particularly a problem for people who leave larger homes for comfortable, but smaller, condominiums.
But that doesn’t mean you-and a few others-can’t eat a meal in your kitchen. Nor does it mean that you have to redesign your home and create a nook near the kitchen to avoid eating in the dining room.
Nor does it mean you have to give up eating altogether.
Not every furniture store sells diminutive small kitchen islands, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t several styles and designs to choose from.
Among the more intriguing is small kitchen islands made of beech wood that’s 43 inches in diameter. Remove the two drop leaves and you have a table that spans 29 1/2 inches across. It can be a two-seater or a four-seater, depending on your needs. That table sells for $149.95 at Elements.
Another unusual small kitchen island table at Elements is the Flip Top, which is made of beech wood and sells for $175. That may sound like a big price for small kitchen islands, but it’s also a small price for a big table-and this table is all of that. The rectangular table has dimensions of 43 by 27 1/2 inches-until you loosen a screw and open the table up. Suddenly the table grows to 55 inches by 43 inches and can seat six comfortably.
There are also several small kitchen islands that can easily be taken apart-the legs being removable from the top-for storage to save space when you want to cook, and not eat, in your kitchen.
“A lot of the small kitchens island are very modern looking-with laminated tops or tops made of glass, tile, metal and iron,” Larson says. “But at least half the kitchen tables are still wood. A lot of people like to keep kitchens traditional looking.
“The only advice I’d give a person with a small kitchen looking for small kitchen islands is to consider a round table. Square or rectangular tables are great for working in small corners and certain angles. But a round table will give you a feel of open space and make the kitchen seem bigger.”
